Welcome Desert Paws Friends !

Desert Paws Animal Rescue of New Mexico is a foster-based, 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer rescue organization that has an open door admission for abandoned, homeless, unwanted and injured dogs and cats from the Cochiti Pueblo. We have a  very successful working relationship with the Pueblo de Cochiti government and over the years have made many friends of tribal members we have worked with in helping tribal animals. We also continue to offer help to tribal members’ pets of the San Felipe and Santo Domingo reservations and admit unwanted dogs and puppies from these tribes also.  We are a place of hope and transition for homeless tribal animals in need of help and refuge who otherwise would perish: The abandoned, the abused, the sick, the old and the suffering. The organization is founded and directed by Raymond Sandor and Krystyn Bleda who reside in the town of Cochiti Lake, NM on the Cochiti Indian reservation.

The organization is a 501(c)3 non-profit and tax-exempt,our Fed ID number is 27-1097015. Raymond and Krystyn and all of our Desert Paws Board and Team members work hands on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without any salary or compensation. Together with a tribal officer we manage an outdoor holding kennel at Cochiti Pueblo  and work with numerous foster families in the Abq/Santa Fe/Los Alamos area that are the foundation of our rescue. We also developed and run a DOOR2DOOR tribal spay/neuter program for all 3 Pueblos where we transport tribal animals to and from to our veterinarian for procedures several days each week. We have also started this year a PETS4SENIORS program so that cats in our care and seniors (humans :-)) can enjoy companionship together while engaging the extended families.

Desert Paws NM Continues it’s TNR Efforts in the Town of Cochiti Lake 4th Year

cat-bushy-bob-like-outdoor

The Town of Cochiti Lake has had many cats left behind by renters and this has left many residents not knowing how to help the felines. Many of the cats have become feral or semi-feral and have reproduced. Did you know that a mature cat can have 3 litters/year…. about 4 kittens per litter? These numbers can add up quickly!

cat-outdoor-kitten

Desert Paws NM has been asked for the 4th year now to assist in TNR to keep the cat population small and healthy. TNR stands for Trap Neuter Release. Desert Paws takes the ferals and semi-feral felines, gets them spayed/neutered, tested, rabies vaccinated and microchipped. The cats are then evaluated for behavior and health. Kittens are typically tamed and adopted to forever families via fostering, adoption events, and online applications. Adults are either adopted in the same method or if they are too stressed to be indoors, then they are either released back to their environment where they do a terrific job of keeping the rodent population at bay, or they may be rehomed to qualified barns in local communities.

Please continue to support Desert Paws NM so we can help these kitties and give them a better quality life.

Monetary donations and canned food are the best way to help us help them!

We are in Need of a Transport Vehicle – Please Share

Desert Paws NM Dog Driver - we need a vehicle :-)

                             Where to?

Many thanks to Bob R and Linda B for stepping up in our time of need this weekend. Our transportation vehicle is 20 yrs old and broke down for the second time in a week. Thanks to them we were able to keep our vet apps and have our adoption event. We do really need a reliable vehicle – if anyone knows of a low mileage mid-sized suv that someone might donate or offer very cheaply please let us know!
